Social Media Breakdown According to @umpump
What is social media? For now, i’ll just boil it down to the current buzz word of the day. Celebrities, Marketers, business owners and the like seem to be jumping into the social media pool, but what is it REALLY? To me, it’s no different than what the Internet was back in 1986. For instance, back in those days, a BBS was a place that supported one or two users at a time, where you could post a message, log out, let someone else post, log back in, read the message, rinse and repeat. Then, chat came around. IRC and AOL ruled this roost in the 90s and held pretty strong. Fueling AOL meetups, heated chatroom discussion and the like. Most of these things were reserved for us more “nerdy” types. Granted some marketers jumped in with the use of “AOL Keyword” and lesser known methods..This was the birth of ‘social’. Nowadays with twitter, myspace, facebook, etc we can attach more images, comments, useless applications and even video..but it’s the same thing, with a few more features. Now the waters are murky with every tom, dick and harry wanting to jump in like it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Guess what? It’s not. It’s the same old thing. Once it loses it’s luster with people like Oprah and Ashton the ‘trendy’ American public will get bored with it. Here, let me put it into a little perspective for ya..
Metallica, upon the release of their 5th album, finally ended up in every jock and preps, cd and cassette player..yes..i said 5th album. This sudden influx of popularity alienated die hard fans like myself and watered down Metallica’s sound for the next 4 albums. Now, that the jocks and mainstream Americans are bored and are onto something else, like mimicking the urban African American style, they finally realeased an album that’s worth a shit. Granted, it’s not more than a chihuahua sized turd..but i liked it. well, some of it.
I know this may not make much sense, but hear me out..’Social Media’, like Metallica, is a trend. When the obsession with being an Internet or fly-by-night celebrity is over..so will this form of social media. It’s a trend, a fad. And when the mainstream are done with it they’ll go back to watching tv and using the internet to search for things to buy or read up on. Search, after all is the one thing that has stayed consistent. The players have changed but the game has stayed the same. Hell, the rules are even still the same.
You may agree with me, you may not. However, i cant wait for the day i can watch a twitter or facebook stream (which oddly resembles a chat room where no one is talking to each other) and get useful information. Well, more than i am now. Twitter, to me, is like a chat room where users toss in random links, bring up subjects causing mini discussions and you get the occasional person that likes to blurt out that they just crapped their pants or cooked dinner. It’s proof that modern society is ADD. Think about it, it’s like being at HUGE party where holding a conversation is virtually impossible…Maybe im an old dog, maybe im not. I’ll keep my eye on what’s going on. To me, it’s the same old thing. It just lights up and buzzes now.
Follow me, or dont. I’ll try and keep it interesting or maybe i wont.
